Melissa Ogier Interview(s)

PHNX Jury Interview 2024

Why did you think it was important to join the PHNX jury this year?
This is my third year with the PHNX jury. I think it's really important to see the creative work that's coming through from around the globe, and to judge it from an Australian perspective.
What do you think of our hybrid jury, featuring creatives but also strategists, clients and people from all corners of the industry?
I enjoy that the PHNX jury is a group of professionals who create work at different stages of the process. The way we consume and appreciate content is remarkably different and the work should be held up to those differing views.
What do you think of the idea of free entry until the shortlist stage?
It's a wonderful opportunity for true creatives who might lack big budgets, to get involved and have their work seen, or possibly awarded. Not much is free in this realm. I hope the AI bots don't bombard you!
How would you define the perfect PHNX Awards winner?
Quality, original content, with talented designers, a good director, emotional storytelling with the perfect soundtrack. Clear messaging and slick editing. A piece that lifts you out of the everyday for that few seconds.
What is having the biggest impact on creative trends at the moment?
AI and new technologies. The perceived fight between the toil of human creatives and the instant output of AI. Creatives have a responsibility to harness these tools and use them for good quality output, while encouraging everyone around us to engage their critical thinking and question what they see and hear, more than ever, especially with mainstream media reporting.

And, the impact of generating outlandish AI imagery for marketing collateral to promote live events, that underdeliver in the physical world. It's something that will need to be closely monitored by the humans, who take for granted that only genuinely creative people have the talent and experience to execute the best experiential activations, and should be engaged.
Who would you nominate as your two or three “creatives of the year”?
Iris Apfel, Rick Rubin and John Galliano
