The NBA Finals Rebrand package is an elevated extension of the regular season package that we had also produced.
Going beyond the role of a production partner, Big Block collaborated closely with ESPN to design a bold new look that would bring a premium polish to the coverage of this dynamic and emotional game. The process took almost a year of design development and exploration, led by Big Block’s Executive Creative Director Curtis Doss.
The resulting package provides a rich palette of color and movement that reflects the swagger and style that is an essential part of the NBA. Each innovative detail and vibrant swash of color is adroitly composed to capture the high-impact energy and emotion of the sport itself.
Big Block worked to build visual touchstones that would put the spotlight on the stars of the show: the NBA players, NBA teams and the redesigned NBA and ESPN co-branded logo.
The creative team began by redesigning the NBA logo, simplifying the signature NBA mark and reconfiguring it in a way that would allow it to house the ESPN logo. With that in mind, the iconic silhouette of legend Jerry West was brought to the forefront, making it the centerpiece of the new logo.
The unique branding and colors of each NBA team is used as a focal point within the broadcasts. Team logos are assembled and rendered with embossed textures in dynamically fluid motion, infusing the broadcast with a high-end, handcrafted aesthetic.
Big Block provided ESPN with the complete toolkit for the integration of live game footage with the logos, supers, buttons and transitions, and team/player-based information like player comparisons and starting lineups. The visuals were designed to be cohesive between ESPN’s pre-shows, the game and post-show broadcasts, with Big Block crafting premium solutions that would keep the look and feel consistent across the board.
The NBA package continues the longstanding creative relationship between ESPN and Big Block, which most recently resulted in their stellar design of the larger-than-life graphics and animation package for ESPN’s Monday Night Football, leading to two Emmy Awards.
