Stephanie Paterik is managing editor of Adweek, where she oversees the editorial staff. She's been a writing instructor and business journalist for more than a decade, specializing in travel, retail and consumer trends.
I manage a newsroom of 30 journalists—including reporters, editors, artists and video producers—with the mission of telling insightful stories about the advertising industry wherever readers are. That includes our print magazine (established in 1978), website (5 million uniques) and social channels (3.7 million followers). A champion of collaboration and multimedia storytelling, I refine internal processes for maximum creativity and efficiency and represent the brand through podcasts, TV appearances and industry events.
I worked closely with the Digital Managing Editor to lead the day-to-day operations at Adweek.com, managing a team of editors, artists and social media specialists. I launched our Digital Projects—in-depth multimedia stories about the worlds of advertising, technology and TV—and AdweekU, a staff training program. My specialties include editing, headline writing, tracking site metrics, reimagining print content for the web and collaborating with department heads across the company. I write about the intersection of advertising and culture and make guest appearances on our podcast, Yeah, That's Probably an Ad.
As the magazine's first Senior Web Editor, I built up a team of digital editors, artists and social media specialists to produce stories about the advertising industry—with a healthy dose of pop culture—for Adweek.com and Adweek's social channels.
I moved to New York and started a business as an editorial consultant for magazines, businesses and authors. My work included:
• Creator of the Business Writing course at Gotham Writers' Workshop, New York's largest private writing school. Taught workshops and coached executives at major organizations.
• Creator and star of Howcast's video series on grammar and editing.
• Researcher and editorial planner for Glamour’s special projects team and Woman of the Year franchise.
• Social media and publicity consultant to Susan Cain, best-selling author of Quiet.
• Contributing writer to PARADE, the most widely read magazine in the U.S. with 70 million readers.
• Editor and consultant to Adweek's Chief Content Officer. Worked closely with reporters and freelancers to ramp up the magazine's digital operation and publish stories, videos and blogs on extreme deadline.
As a graduate student in the competitive MFA Creative Writing program, I was research assistant to poetry coordinator, author and Best American Poetry (BAP) editor David Lehman. I coordinated literary events, including the annual BAP book launch gala featuring the nation's most celebrated poets and 300 attendees. I served as project manager for the book's anniversary edition, wrote speeches, scoured literary journals for fresh voices and copy edited manuscripts.
I oversaw daily operations at Phoenix’s highest-circulated magazine. As a manager of 25 editors, freelance writers, interns and photographers, my responsibilities included developing story ideas, helping writers execute them and editing the final page proofs. I also wrote travel and home decor columns. By spearheading a print and digital redesign and targeting young readers, I helped increase circulation by 13 percent in a down economy.
Starting as a teen correspondent, I worked my way up to editorial assistant, intern, city council/cops reporter and ultimately business reporter, covering the state's high-profile tourism and gaming industries for the U.S.'s 10th largest daily newspaper. I won Press Club awards for investigative and business reporting.
