Los Angeles-based director Matt Bieler adopted a love of filmmaking at a young age. His love got a bit more serious when he teamed up with two of the world’s leading creative production companies, Anonymous Content and A Band Apart. After working closely with top commercial and music video directors, Bieler stepped into the Director’s Chair himself at Serial Pictures. He has since emerged as a poetic visual storyteller, the force behind work that is poignant, stylish and entertaining. He recently directed the art doc Words by Rakim, a Vimeo Staff Pick that Jutapoz called “not only insightful into the world of an accomplished hip-hop artist, but an artistic approach to the medium of documentary shorts.” Other recent work includes highly praised web films for Apple—“Esa-Pekka’s Verse,” featuring the world-renowned principal conductor of the London Philharmonic, and “Chéri’s Verse,” featuring a deaf travel blogger; and an acclaimed spot for Windhoek Lager featuring footballer Drogba out of Jupiter Drawing Room.
Bieler directed “Be Creative” for Samsung’s Galaxy Note II with designer Alexander Wang, which premiered opening day of 2013 New York Fashion Week. And he directed spots for adidas featuring NFL Super Stars Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Hawks’ Josh Smith, both via 180 Los Angeles. His VHI “Save the Music” PSA was nominated for an AICP Honor, and his Coke Zero “I Do Music” was included in the MOFILM video showcase in Cannes. He was also part of SHOOT’s New Directors Showcase as a director to watch.
