Joachim Back is an Academy-award winning filmmaker and prolific commercial director, who brings a rare sensibility for visually inventive comedy to the advertising world and beyond.Joachim first began working in film as a teenager in his native Denmark, transitioning into different technical positions in the camera and lighting departments, as well as an assistant editor. Determined to step behind the camera, Joachim borrowed equipment and began shooting his own spec spots, where his oddball comic sensibility quickly got him noticed.
Joachim has been working nonstop ever since. Over the past decade, Joachim has helmed ads for major global clients such as Range Rover, Chivas, Audi, Stella Artois, Honda, Volvo, and Miller Light, with his most recent credits including work for Carl’s Jr, Chevy, Citroen, Ikea, Quaker, and US Cellular.
Joachim’s many accolades include ANDY Awards, ADDY Awards, CLIOs, Cannes Lions, and the D&AD Pencil for Chivas Regal’s darkly comedic branded short “Here’s to Big Bear.” Joachim won a Cannes Gold Lion in 2005 for his audacious Viagra campaign “Beep” – the little blue pill’s first foray into comedy – which became one of the most decorated spots in the industry. That year Joachim appeared on the Gunn Report as one of the top 10 most awarded directors in the world.
This incredible success led Joachim to direct his first short film, The New Tenants, starring Vincent D’Onofrio. The film won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.
In 2014, Joachim Back signed with Anonymous Content for commercial representation, as well as representation for film and TV management. He currently lives in Brooklyn, NY with his wife and two children
