Diego Duran Interview(s)

POV: Director

How would you describe what you do?
I think is a creative process where through the different combination of a team skills and talents we can capture visual concepts to convey ideas or emotions.
How did you get into this job?
I started my carreer animating characters for commercials and I realized that acting was also one of my passions. I decided to specialize in the direction of actors and with this I started directing my first audiovisual pieces.
What is most challenging about what you do?
The biggest challenge I have faced is to be original without losing the concept of the client's idea. And in projects that have a script I like to keep a storytelling that hooks the viewer.
What is most rewarding?
The most rewarding is to see the expectations being overcome with the final result and the continuous learning with each challenge.
What’s a typical work week like?
The executive producer receives the campaign brief which he shares with me so that I can analyze it. I usually do a director´s approach in which I propose the development of the idea through my vision as a director. Then depending on each project I choose which director of photography I will work with, which camera and lens I would like to shoot with and in which locations. I also make an approach to art and costumes.

In this way, after the project has been approved, we hold a couple of internal meetings, a technique and a creative one to start the preproduction stage of the project. When I do not have a project ongoing, I usually spend my time watching movies or studying.
What needs to happen the most in order for a shoot to run smoothly?
For me it is very important to have a good relationship with all the crew and the speed at which I can work with the director of photography and my first assistant.
Whats your best job/worst job?
I like a very emotional commercial that I made for an Efecty campaign because I was able to connect with all the actors.
I do not like those jobs that are some kind of favors because resources and time are usually limited.
What advice would you offer someone considering a career as a Director?
Devote time to watch and analyze movies and audiovisual pieces.
If you had one project that you could post on AdForum to represent your work, what would it be?
The most emotional commercial and with several actors is Efecty.
This commercial was highlighted several times and thanks to this my career took a new direction. It was a great challenge because it was filmed in a single day, taking into account the number of actors, shots and children.
Finally tell us something that most people don’t know about being a Director?
Being a director represents more than loving films, it means being attentive to the details of life and human behavior. Know something about history, art, psychology and, above all, know how to tell stories.
