'Call Glenn’ was a powerful initiative to raise awareness about the dangers of non-consensual sexting. It was inspired by the tragic story of Glenn, a 15-year-old boy who died by suicide in 2017 after a nude photo of him was shared online without his consent, leading to severe online harassment.Child Focus reactivated Glenn’s old phone and number, transforming it into a powerful tool for advocacy. When people called the number, they heard a voicemail that poignantly narrated Glenn’s story, followed by an invitation to sign an audio petition advocating for stronger legal protections for minors against online sexual exploitation. This unique use of his phone number and voicemail as a medium allowed for direct and personal engagement, making the issue more tangible and emotionally resonant for the public.Glenn’s phone received nearly 38,000 calls, far surpassing the initial target necessary to raise the issue in Belgian parliament. Meanwhile, the entire country was talking about online safety for children, resulting in more than 1.1 million euros in earned media. This led to parliament unanimously approving a bill resulting in Belgium’s first commissioner dedicated to children’s online safety.
